While many Dalmatian fans came to love the breed because of Disney’s 101 Dalmatians film, the breed has actually been popular since at least the 1800s!
Originating in Croatia on the Dalmatia coastal region, they became a status symbol in Regency England and were often known as carriage dogs because they would trot along beside horse-drawn carriages. They’re also very good with horses and were often used to guard stables.
This affinity for horses led to them becoming used as Firehouse dogs, back in the days when horses pulled fire trucks; the Dalmatian would run ahead to lead them through smoke and then guard the horses while the firefighters dealt with the fire.
Of course, with the Disney cartoon adaptation of Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, there was also a resurgence in the breed’s popularity as a family pet.
